Gloryhole In Scotland

And what happened to the Colombian satellite? Much ding ding ... The Internet

For several years the project of having a satellite with Colombian national was in the spotlight as part of the key plans of the Government in terms of connectivity and communications. However, having declared void (again) the tender for the "design, manufacture, launch and in orbit performance validation Satellite Communications System Colombia Social SATCOL, these plans will have to rethink it or yes. We can no longer dream in orbit by 2012, as initially proposed.

And, what a Satellite?

On the one hand, Colombia is a country with geographical conditions are difficult (if not expensive), to establish communication systems in fiber optics, like most telephone and telecommunications networks today. The ambition was (or is) to interface SATCOL near 50,000 points in the country, which lead to considerable savings of 165 million dollars over the next 15 years. Albeit with a modest investment of about 530 billion pesos, in the apparatus and its operation.

addition, the same Diego Molano, Minister for Information Technology and Communications, gave it three additional responsibilities: he must fulfill a social purpose (linking hospitals, schools, libraries and battalions, among many others ), to help consolidate peace and security, and engage in business development, from telecommunications.

And now what is done with that little money?

Well, there are two bids that the government has declared deserted, both to determine that participants did not fully 21 points of the specification. So while this project is "in see" and hope the third time is the charm, the Minister Molano will continue as announced in its list of priorities: progress with technology plan that seeks to bring fiber to 500 municipalities, investing a considerable amount of the total amount of resources devoted to the satellite. At the same time, announced that it will be allocated more frequencies in the band 2.5 GHz to increase the supply of land mobile services (such as internet and mobile telephony).

Stay tuned for how these stories evolve. We hope, like all Colombians, that these funds do not end up in different hands, and that benefit as many people around the country.
